The Spiggie which is currently a Licensed Guest House has been trading since it was built in the turn of the twentieth century. The Henderson family who located to Spiggie in the 1870's traded as local merchants and built two hotels (The Spiggie Hotel and Henderson’s Hotel) adjacent to each other and brother’s Robert and Thomas Henderson were their first proprietors. The Henderson’s hotel has been a private dwelling for several years butb has also been used for additional accommodation.
The building to the right-hand side of the Guest House was the Henderson’s shop and the family also lived there. In later years this building became accommodation for the numerous chamber maids that came from the surrounding area and even from Lerwick as late as the 1970’s. It also used to be let as holiday apartments (The Spiggie Flats)with many Shetland school children coming down to Spiggie for summer holidays.
|In its very early days, the Spiggie Guest House attracted wealthy visitors from mainland UK and Europe. They would travel here by ‘Steamer’ from Leith and disembark at the Spiggie Beach. Whilst at Spiggie, the gentlemen would hunt and shoot seals or fish for trout in the loch or salmon at the inlet. The ladies would read, play music, embroider fine linen or even learn to spin and weave. Guests would spend 1 or 2 weeks at Spiggie before either heading to another part of the Islands or back to the mainland. During the great depression of the 1930’s the Henderson’s had to sell some of their assets and moved away from Shetland. The hotel was then taken over by a previously frequent visitor from Glasgow. A local family managed the hotel on his behalf and over a period of time purchased the hotel from him. The Burgess family ran the hotel until the early 1980‘s. After a period of lying empty for a few years, the hotel was substantially refurbished by a family returning to Shetland in the 1990’s and had been operating all year round since that time.
The Spiggie now enters a new phase of trading as a Licensed Guest Houses however, with its history of almost 140 years, the Spiggie Guest House strives to provide its guests with memorable experiences that they are happy to share and re-live with others. We hope you might be one of them.
